Note from Chief Umpire - Martin Brookes re: Umpire course and Umpires refreshers Course - please take note as you CANNOT play Nationals if you are grade 4 and above and have not completed this course and if you have not taken an refreshers course this year!!!
Hi All,
This Saturday 7th August (Midland tournament) there will be a grading meeting at 7pm in the scorers tent. Attached is the current grading list. All club reps are required to attend the meeting. Please can any grade changes of 8 points and below be emailed to myself ( martin_brookes@hotmail.com) by Thursday 5th August so that I can update the changes on the grading list. All suggested grade changes of 9 points or higher must be brought to the meeting for discussion.
Also below are 2 documents showing who is still required to attend a refresher course (so that they can play at Nationals) or who is still required to pass an umpire exam (so that they can play at Nationals.)

Proposed
date change of Inter regionals to 25th and 26th of September
Due to unavoidable circumstances it seems likely that
we will have to push back the date of the Inter regionals
to the 25th and 26th of September. We realise this is
month after Nationals and at the moment there are no
tournaments planned in that month.
The executive would really like to see the Inter regionals
return and be big and successful this year and are working
on a number of ideas to make it different and exciting.
We hope that all clubs members will be willing to keep
their horses fit during the month of September and that
clubs are willing to organise training and tournaments
as well.
The only other alternative is probably to cancel the
inter regionals which we do not wish to do. We welcome
the feedback of all UKPA members so if you have any
comments please email Jeff Parr on secretary@ukpolocrosse.co.uk
or talk to your regional executive officer

In
memory of Mark Simkin
The entire polocrosse community will be saddened to
learn of the sudden death last weekend of Mark Simkin.
Mark was a great stalwart of polocrosse and as a key
figure in the sport played an important part in its
development in the UK from the early days. Mark was
due to welcome an incoming tour of NSW Juniors this
week. It is a tribute both to his experience in organising
these visits and the willingness of the polocrosse community
to rally round that this visit will go ahead as Mark
had planned. A more complete appreciation of Mark and
his contributions to polocrosse will appear at a later
date. However, at this time our thoughts are with Marion
and all the Simkin family.

Note
from Chief Umpire - Martin Brookes
Below is the current grading list (as agreed at the
last grading meeting.) The next grading meeting is on
Saturday 7th August (Midland Tournament.)
At all of the tournaments I will try to hold refresher
courses for clubs (please contact me on 07912 042010
to arrange dates/times) and umpire exams (please go
to the UKPA web site for the umpire course.) All players
16+ y.o. and on 4+ points must have passed their umpire
exam to play at Nationals. All current umpires must
complete a refresher course this year to play at Nationals.
I have been contacted by one player wishing to go onto
the Elite Umpire scheme (as explained to all clubs at
the Council Meeting & Grading Meeting), if there
is any one else who would be interested please contact
me or talk to me at a tournament.
Thank you,
Martin Brookes (UKPA Chief Umpire)

Sports
Development update As part of the council meeting
on the 8th of May (being held at Arden clubhouse) I
will be quickly going through some sports development
ideas that we have had and looking for ideas from the
membership as to how we can take the sport forwards.
Sports development is a massive area of the sport and
covers a large range of areas, from talking to interested
people to finding sponsorship and organising demonstrations
to developing press coverage for the sport.
Obviously lots of areas means that ideally we have
lots of people involved with it and so I would like
to invite anyone who is interested in sports development
to either come along to the council meeting or to get
in touch with me to have a chat about the plans going
forwards.
I am presently finding that more and more of my time
is getting used up in other (far less exciting) topics
and so I would really like to see each region, and indeed
each individual club, have a person who looks after
the sports development work for that area. Most sports
development ideas have to be carried out at a local
level and hopefully by finding lots of people willing
to help we can achieve a lot more (and all have to work
a bit less as many hands make light work).
So please can regions and clubs have a think about
whether they have anyone who they think would be interested
in doing sports development work and if so ask them
if they would be willing to.
Also can the clubs please circulate this email around
their members and if anyone is interested in getting
involved with any aspect of developing the sport then
please come along to the council meeting or just get
in touch with me!
I have many different ideas as to what we can do to
develop the sport and I’m sure you all have many more
as well. I will aim to establish a sports development
committee with at least one representative from each
region on it and we can co ordinate our efforts through
that group and identify what areas people want to work
on.
Many Thanks
Iain Heaton (Sports Development Officer)

UKPA
extends Starter Kit offer
The UKPA is delighted to announce that it will extend
its subsidised starter kit scheme, for those wanting
to give polocrosse a go, as it proved so popular earlier
this year.
It has teamed up with Bennett polocrosse equipment
again to offer a new batch of cheap starter kits to
interested groups in the UK and help grow the sport.
This new offer has been made possible due to funding
from Sport England and a donation from the Worshipful
Company of saddlers.
The last batch of starter kits sold very quickly and
we expect this lot to be equally popular. Most of the
last set of kits went to riding centres and pony clubs
and hopefully we will see more and more of these groups
getting into the sport over the next year. For all the
relevant documents please click on the links below.

Lots to help Team GBR get to WEG
The UK Polocrosse Association has contributed two polocrosse
lots to the Team GBR online auction to help raise the
funds necessary to send the Great Britain teams to WEG.
They have teamed up with UK polocrosse star Jason Webb
to offer a polocrosse experience day for four people
and have also donated two VIP tickets to next year’s
polocrosse world cup, which is being held at Bishop
Burton college in the UK.
Iain Heaton, the UKPA’s CEO said “Though polocrosse
is not a WEG sport in itself we are a member of the
BEF and do all we can to help both it and our fellow
member bodies.”
The first lot, the polocrosse experience day is online
now at the www.auction.equestrianteamgbr.co.uk
The second lot of the tickets will be up in about a
month's time.
